Which lawn mower to buy?

The lawn mower to buy is a compromise between the need for speed and the need for convenience and saving money.

The standard width for a small lawn (up to 750 sq. ft) is 12 in. and for an average-sized lawn (750-1500 sq. ft) a 14 in. cutting width is recommended.

Large lawns (1500-5000 sq. ft) need a cutting width of 16 in. at the lower end of this range and 20 in. width at the higher end.

For the very large lawn you will require self-propelled or ride-on petrol mowers with a cutting width of at least 22 in.

Do I want the best possible finish?

A cylinder lawn mower will give you the cleanest and the closest cut - a grass box will remove the clippings. A back roller is essential if you want a striped look.
