Lawn care September to December
September lawn care
The Fall lawn care program begins in
September with the increasing interval between lawn mowings and
the raising of the height of cut to the Fall level, which is a
quarter of an inch above the summer cutting height.
Worms may become active. There are no
longer any chemical worm killers so brush away the casts and
increase soil acidity next year by applying Lawn Sand in
Spring.
October lawn care
Regular lawn mowing comes to an end during
October. For the last cut or two, raise the cutter height and
brush off dew or raindrops before cutting. The edges of the
lawn should be trimmed for the winter.
Apply a Fall lawn fertilizer, carry out lawn
repairs and complete the scarify-spike-top dress routine if
these jobs were not tackled last month. Brush up fallen leaves,
which would harm the grass and increase the worm problem if
left on the surface.
Dig out tufts of coarse grass, the re-turf
or re-seed the bare patches. If moss is present, use
dichlorophen and not Lawn Sand at this time of the year.
On the new lawn, seed sowing should have
been completed but the ideal time for turf laying is only just
beginning.
