Lawn care May and June
May lawn care
Continue mowing the lawn, increasing frequency as necessary and lower the height of cut closer to the summer level. Once a week lawn mowing starts in May.
In most seasons May is the best month for weed killing with either a selective weed killer or Lawn Sand. Remember the need for dry grass, moist soil and a fine still day when using a weedkiller. If annual meadow grass or clover is present, brush or rake the patches before lawn mowing.
The soil is usually moist in May but a prolonged dry spell can occur. If this happens, water before obvious signs of distress appear and always irrigate copiously.
June lawn care
Summer lawn mowing should now be under way . The lawn should be mowed twice a week since cutting will be necessary when the soil is moist. If there is a long dry spell, raise the height of the cut and do not use the grass box.
June is the time for summer feeding and weeding. If the lawn is off-color, use a quick-acting nitrogen feed such as sulphate of ammonia or a proprietary liquid one. Spot-treat weeds which have survived earlier treatment. Lawn raking before lawn mowing is important for keeping the runners of clover under control.
Trim the edges of the lawn regularly and be prepared to water if there is a dry spell. Hot weather this month may have baked the surface soil. It is often a good idea to prick the surface lightly before lawn irrigation.
