Lawn care March and April
March lawn care
The lawn care work starts in March. As soon as the grass has started to grow and the weather and ground conditions are favorable, rake the lawn to remove leaves and surface rubbish from the lawn.
Do not rake the lawn too vigorously at this stage or you will damage the grass. If there have been heavy frosts during the winter, it is a good idea to settle the turf by light rolling. A cylinder lawn mower with the cutting head held high is a good method.
The first lawn mower cut should merely remove the top of the grass. Close lawn mower cutting at this stage could result in severe yellowing. Choose a day when the surface is dry. Two cuts are sufficient in March.
Lawn mowing is not the only lawn care job in March. Look for the early signs of lawn disease. Apply a moss killer if necessary and neaten the edges with a half moon edging iron. Broken edges of lawn can be repaired in March.
April lawn care
Feeding and weeding can begin towards the end of April, provided that the grass and weeds are actively growing. If Lawn Sand is used, make sure that it is spread evenly and that the dead moss is raked up a fortnight later.
Mow the lawn often enough to stop the grass growing away, but do not cut lower than ¾" - 1 ¼", depending on the type of lawn.
Dig out patches of coarse grass and fill the holes with sifted soil and then re-seed or re-turf. Check new turf and refill joints if necessary.
