Lawn care (continues..)
Lawn care basics #5 - rake during the spring and again the
Fall
Next in lawn care is raking the lawn. Rake
the lawn with a spring tine rake. Raking the lawn has
several benefits for lawn care management. The build-up of
thatch is prevented and surface debris is removed. The removal
of fallen leaves in the Fall is essential. Never leave them on
the surface over winter as this reflects very poor lawn care
efforts. Raking up creeping stems of weeds before lawn mowing
helps in their control. Wheeled rakes are now available and can
help make the lawn care process easier.
Lawn care basics #6 - remove worm casts
when they appear
Next in lawn care is removing worm casts.
Worm casts should never be ignored. When squashed underfoot the
surface is rendered uneven and the bare earth makes an ideal
seed bed for weeds. When casts appear scatter them with a besom
before lawn mowing and removing the clippings by using a grass
box. Using Lawn Sand helps to control worms.
Lawn care basics #7 - kill weeds and moss
when they appear
Weeds and moss hinder lawn care process.
Don't wait until the weeds and moss problems get out of
control. Occasional weeds can be pulled out and occasional
patches of moss indicate that the growing conditions have to be
improved. Apply a weed killer or moss killer promptly as soon
as there is an obvious invasion of weeds and/or moss. No single
product can do everything so use the right chemical or
non-chemical technique.
