Irrigation history in the New World

Irrigation history also appeared simultaneously in the New World: Aztecan, Incan, and Mayan cultures all used it. In fact, much of the credit for their success can be traced to irrigation, which made it possible to produce the enormous quantities of food needed to support burgeoning populations.

The limit of irrigation

Irrigation techniques have not always been limited to agricultural uses. Display gardens in Roman atria depended on water brought in from elsewhere, and estate gardens have long used irrigation. The use of sprinkler systems in home landscaping first became popular after World War II, and even drip irrigation, which sounded new-fangled only a few years ago, has now become well established.
